About The Story

Elizabeth Key

Long before America was a nation—when Jamestown yet stood a fragile English outpost clinging to survival upon the edge of an untamed wilderness—there was born, along the banks of the Warwick River in the of Our Lord 1630, a child who would one day shake the very foundations of colonial law.

Her name was Elizabeth Key.

Born to a bound African mother and a White English father, Elizabeth stood at the crossroads of race, law, and identity in a world not yet prepared to reckon with her existence. For nearly two decades, she labored beneath broken promises and shifting claims of ownership. Held beyond her indenture by Colonel John Mottrom, a powerful figure in colonial Virginia, Elizabeth endured the slow violence of injustice.
Her soul-wrenching fight for freedom culminated in a landmark lawsuit in 1655, where she argued not only for her liberty—but for recognition of her humanity.

Elizabeth won.

Yet victory was hard-won, etched with struggle and paid for in hardship. Her case was overturned, appealed, and contested again.
When Elizabeth ultimately prevailed, the consequences reached far beyond her own freedom. Her courage exposed fissures in colonial law, forcing Virginia’s ruling elite to confront the instability of a system that could not yet fully contain the contradictions it had created.
Her courage exposed weaknesses within colonial law, forcing Virginia’s leaders to confront the instability of a system that could not yet fully reconcile its own contradictions.

In response, Virginia’s lawmakers tightened their grip.

Race, religion, and inheritance were codified into rigid and unyielding categories. Status would follow the condition of the mother. Baptism would no longer promise deliverance. The fluid boundaries that once allowed argument would harden into permanence. What had been contested in a courtroom was now inscribed into statute.  Thus emerged a doctrine of racial supremacy—one that would not merely justify but intensify and expand the enslavement of Africans and their descendants for the next two centuries, shaping the economic foundation and social order of the colonies and, eventually, the nation itself.
